7 days into growing the HeyCreator YouTube channel

LET'S FORKIN GO

by Tim Forkin

We’re 7 days into my public journey to grow the HeyCreator YouTube channel in order to get monetized.

As of writing, we’re at:

  • 235/1000 subscribers (+18)
  • 198/4000 public watch hours (+53)

Let’s jump right into what I’ve been working on…

Creator Advice (with Matt & Tim)

In our search for a recurring segment, we kept coming back to Creator Advice — our spin on “mailbag” content where we take questions from our audience.

Matt and I are both avid listeners of The Ryen Russillo Podcast and his Life Advice segment is gold. Hilarious, helpful, and randomly addicting. I might not listen to every interview, but I don’t miss Life Advice. Plus, my question was recently answered by the hosts… and the feeling of writing into a show and getting an answer is unmatched.

We see an opportunity to build an army of Creator Advice followers who are constantly sending in questions and listening for the answers. It’s fun, easy, and laid back — plus, we can always bring our guests in to answer listener-submitted questions as well.

The first edition of Creator Advice is out now on Spotify and will be on YouTube tomorrow.

Editing the YouTube version of this segment allowed me to level up the HeyCreator visuals, too (which I wrote about last week as being a primary goal of mine).

Using titles to find ideas

I recently came across Jake Thomas and his Creator Hooks newsletter & product.

Jake specializes in finding successful YouTube title formats you can use to give your videos a better chance of success.

I’m not quite ready to sign up for his tool, but I was able to sift through his recent editions of his newsletter and come up with formats to try for HeyCreator content.

Here’s a few I like:

  • It’s actually pretty easy to (Achieve Massive Goal)
  • (Easy Things) that make EVERYTHING (Hard, Desirable Goal)!
  • 5 Things (Aspirational Group) Do Before (Time or Event)

Examples for each could be:

  • It’s actually pretty easy to make $1M with a paid community.
  • 10 Automations That Make Newsletter Growth AUTOMATIC
  • 5 Things Successful Creators Do Before Launching A Course

Adding fun into the edit

I wrote last week:

“…How do we have fun? How do we play games, be silly, and create opportunities to laugh? There’s so much helpful content for creators out there, but this will be our separator. The brand is colorful and fun, and I’m desperate for our content to match.”

I know this will always be something I’m striving for, but I was happy to come up with simple edits like this one:

And this Ridiculousness-inspired disclaimer for the videos where we get in-the-weeds about email list size & revenue numbers:

Last thing…

What are you thinking about this series? I’m planning on doing this every week until we hit our goal (and maybe through it), and following it up with a second weekly send that is back to my normal tactical content advice or letters.

Reply and let me know!
