Oops, I went viral

I went viral to the tune of 1.3 million views, 220k likes and close to 4,000 followers in one week.

But it wasn’t on my @timforkindotcom channels.

I created an anonymous TikTok account to act upon an idea that had been bubbling in my head for months now.

And it blew up.

Here’s the story.

I am really nerdy about three things: content creation, sports, and music.

You know me from the content creation side. I’m a short-form video editor for several cool companies, and I’m documenting what I learn here.

But sports and music are a huge part of my life, too —and I’m a nerd for when they intersect.

On separate calls, I mentioned to friends that I had an idea for anonymous TikTok account that focused solely on athlete references in rap music. The more obscure, the better — if an artist name-dropped the Detroit Lions’ backup running back in 2015, I’m creating a simple video highlighting the player and the lyrics.

I thought I was the only one who cared about sports references in songs — so I created @crazysportsreferences on TikTok and was met with immediate success.

Suddenly, I’ve found a community of people who fans of sports and rap music, constantly arguing in the comments over whether or not the artist/athlete is good.

Takeaways:

  • Feel like you’re the only one in the world who loves something? Congrats, you’ve found your niche.
  • Trust what feels like a good idea.
  • Don’t worry about monetization with every project — have fun first
  • I will keep the account anonymous forever. I’m planning on posting some lyrics that aren’t, umm, professional… but I wanted you to see this case study while my audience is still small.
  • Comments are always the most important metric.

Do your thing.
Tim
