The Mane Problem

Other creators have something I don’t:

Style variety.

When you visit my short-form video profiles, it’s some just 23-year-old with green eyes and gray hair with a nice setup talking about content creation and video editing.

With my clients, I preach style variety. This week, I told a client:

“Let’s do three highly edited videos per week, a few native ones, maybe a man-on-the street in there too — it doesn’t all need to be suped up.”

On my page, it’s talking head — every time.

Like most video editors, I care far too much about stuff that doesn’t actually matter. As often as I tell my clients to take down the barrier they have to posting content, I put those exact same barriers up for my own content.

I don’t practice what I preach.

With every job posting, pro athlete, artist, and even the people we choose to spend our lives with, there’s one trait that allows people to succeed no matter the circumstance:

Versatility.

We praise potential hires based on their ability to cover multiple roles.

We praise athletes who are able to slide up and down the lineup.

We praise artists who bend genres and still sound amazing.

We choose husbands and wives based on their ability to be supportive partners and parents.

In content, versatility isn’t a goal — it’s a requirement.

Creators need to kill short- and long-form video content, written social posts and newsletters, podcast hosting and appearances.

Editors need to be able to edit and understand every single platform, align with their client’s goals and see what’s coming next.

I’m working on breaking down my barriers and becoming as versatile as possible — both as a creator and editor.

You can’t win as a one-trick pony.
Tim
